Suffolk Based printer AbbeyHine continues to invest for improved quality and efficiencies in an environmentally conscious way... Combined with the installation of a new Heidelberg XL 75 press the company decided to see what further improvements could be made.Long-term local supplier to the company Mayday Graphic Products recommended installing an RO unit (Reverse Osmosis) to deliver improved quality by reducing, the risks of contaminates entering the production process. Graham Timson Mayday’s MD explains “There are many ways in which the finished printed item can show defects, one common problem can be water quality. Most alcohol substitutes contain buffering agents; the pH can remain the same while the conductivity of a solution increases proportionately to the concentration of fountain solution additives and contaminants. Water softeners and filters can alleviate the problem, but not remove it entirely; using Reverse Osmosis removes salts, minerals, and organic matter and is the only way to eliminate hard water. Other factors such as refrigeration and filtration can achieve marked improvements in print quality when installed. Refrigeration will reduce evaporation and significantly control viscosity. Alcohol substitutes have little or no effect on dampening system viscosity. One way to offset the loss in viscosity as a result of substitutes is to use refrigeration.” Tom Allum, Director, AbbeyHine is very pleased with the results stating “the effect for us at Abbey Hine has been a marked reduction in our chemical consumption, also our press quality control and consistency has improved, and not forgetting the reduced environmental impact from using less chemistry.” Mayday Graphic Products supply Reverse Osmosis systems that are cost effective and can be tailored to work with just one press or the entire pressroom.
